Mark Steyn at David Horowitz’s Restoration Weekend 2017

Mark Steyn is one of the best political commentators of our time. Not a Trump apologist, he still nailed the Trump phenomenon when other commentators on the right were in a mist. He was able to do this because he understands we are at war with a multicultural elite who are trying to destroy the very foundations of Christendom or Western Civilization. His speech is well worth listening to.

Harry Reid’s Cronyist UFO Hunt Cost Taxpayers $20 Million

A recent program in the Defense Department for the purpose of understanding “unidentified aerial phenomena” cost taxpayers at least $20 million.

The program was initiated by Harry Reid, at the behest of a campaign contributor, when he was still Senate majority leader. Politico reports:

Reid initiated the program, which ultimately spent more than $20 million, through an earmark after he was persuaded in part by aerospace titan and hotel chain founder Bob Bigelow, a friend and fellow Nevadan who owns Bigelow Aerospace, a space technology company and government contractor. Bigelow, whose company received some of the research contracts, was also a regular contributor to Reid’s re-election campaigns, campaign finance records show, at least $10,000 between 1998 and 2008.

Corporate cronyism takes many forms today, much of it driven by liberals who are supposed to be for the little people. However, this has to be one of the craziest.

The Deep State at War with America

As Mark Steyn points out, Roy Moore didn’t lose because of the allegations against him, he lost because he had to run against both the Democrats and Republicans.

Mitch McConnell, Chuck Schumer, and their congressional friends aren’t alone in their opposition to anything that would help President Trump and flyover America from wresting control of the government. They are joined by the deepest of the deep state in the CIA and FBI.

David Stockman lists some of the culprits:

They include John Brennan, Jim Comey, Sally Yates, Peter Strzok and a passel of deep state operatives — all of whom baldly abused their offices. After Brennan had concocted the whole Russian election meddling meme to sully the Donald’s shocking election win, the latter three holdovers — functioning as a political fifth column in the new Administration — set a perjury trap designed to snare Mike Flynn as a first step in relitigating and reversing the voters’ verdict.

The smoking gun on their guilt is so flamingly obvious that the ability of the Trump-hating media to ignore it is itself a wonder to behold.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals

Looking at relationships between peoples in terms of color, and more specifically in terms of white racism and oppression of blacks, is the prevailing view among many secular and religious groups in America today. Thomas Sowell’s provides a historical perspective that suggest this view is not accurate in his book, Black Rednecks and White Liberals.

Thomas Sowell closely examines historical relationships between those of various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds with the intent of applying it to race relations in the U.S. today. He begins with this quote:

These people are creating a terrible problem in our cities. They can’t or won’t hold a job, they flout the law constantly and neglect their children, they drink too much and their moral standards would shame an alley cat. For some reason or other, they absolutely refuse to accommodate themselves to any kind of decent, civilized life (p. 1).

No Tolerance at Airbnb

As I attempted to log in to my Airbnb account yesterday, I was greeted with this message:

Before you continue
Whether it’s your first time using Airbnb or you’re one of our original travelers, please commit to respecting and including everyone in the Airbnb community.

I agree to treat everyone in the Airbnb community—regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age—with respect, and without judgment or bias.

Though I too often fail at it, my goal is to treat everyone with respect. But that doesn’t mean I always agree with them. And sometimes, I even think they are wrong. In other words, I judge them. And I judge whatever situation I’m in with the bias that comes with being a Christian who believes what the Bible says because it is God’s Word. I can’t not look at the world other than the way God describes it. And if there are people who are living out their lives outside of God’s Word, I’m going to see it as wrong–just as I see it is wrong when I sin against God. So I clicked ‘decline’ on Airbnb’s community statement.

Get Your Swimsuits Out

According to the New York Times, it won’t be long before we will all be swimming to work:

The truth is, how shall we put it, a bit more nuanced.

Truth through Simplicity

The opponents of freedom thrive in an environment of complexity. One of my favorite examples of this is when Politifact labeled as half true a statement by Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams “Gas prices have gone up $2 since Obama took office.” Politifact looked at the facts, determined that gas prices had in fact gone up $2 dollars since Obama had taken office, but after a long, complex analysis of things that had nothing to do with the statement in question still labeled it only “Half True.”

Our job as free market conservatives is to cut through the false complexity of the left and the big government moderates and simplify the issues so that people can see the truth. It is very hard to do this, because, as R.C. Sproul points out below, we have to have in-depth knowledge of the very complex issues ourselves before we can simplify them without distorting the truth. It is also hard because any errors we make will be attacked by opponents of liberty.

Real Reformers’ Real Advantage

“The real reformer has a real advantage, but one which he rarely recognizes himself as having. Living in the world that actually exists is an enormous advantage. There are times when it almost seems to me like cheating or something. In the long run, we need not worry. In the long run, blind stupidity never works. The revolutionary alternates between throwing rocks at the moon and barking at it.” – Douglas Wilson, Rules for Reformers, p. 176.

When he says “real reformer,” Wilson is referring to those who are trying to conform the way we live and/or the rules we operate under to the way the world was designed to operate. Which is generally what conservatives and Christians are trying to do. So the advantage we have over the left is that our vision for the world is much closer to reality than theirs. Of course, they get to play loose with the truth; that makes our job tougher. Nevertheless, we have the upper hand, and will eventually prevail.

Cronyism & Comcast

Comcast is in the process of buying Time Warner Cable, a deal that will create the largest cable provider in the U.S.

The FCC, of course, has to approve the deal. It is no surprise that Comcast and Time Warner Cable have done their best to grease the wheels for approval through political donations and programming.

However, a recent column  by Matthew Continetti  on NRO leads conservatives in the wrong direction on both cronyism and public policy.
